Microorganisms, Tryptophan Metabolism, and Kynurenine Pathway: A Complex Interconnected Loop Influencing Human Health Status

Abstract: The kynurenine pathway is important in cellular energy generation and limiting cellular ageing as it degrades about 90% of dietary tryptophan into the essential co-factor NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Prior to the production of NAD+, various intermediate compounds with neuroactivity (kynurenic acid, quinolinic acid) or antioxidant activity (3-hydroxykynurenine, picolinic acid) are synthesized. The kynurenine metabolites can participate in numerous neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer disease, amy… Show more

“…Endogenous essential amino acids, such as tryptophan are known to be crucial in the production of serotonin. Despite being located in the gut, serotonin also plays an important role in mood regulation and cognition, whilst enabling GI regulation [25]. For example, Groer et al, (2018) proposed that insufficient tryptophan levels are associated with obesity and inflammation and increase risk of maternal depression in obese pregnant women [26].…”

“…Microorganisms are potent producers of various value-added bioproducts through assimilation of cheap residues and wastes (Hamedi et al, 2015b;Mohammadipanah et al, 2015). At present, the application of microbial-based technologies has significantly contributed to solving various problems encountered by humans, ranging from antibiotic and enzyme production to bioremediation and even disease prevention (Hamedi et Dehhaghi et al, 2019). In line with this, the present review comprehensive presents and discusses chemicals with promising liquid fuel properties produced using fermentation of biomass by bacteria and yeasts.…”
