Micropatterned flexible strain gauge sensor based on wet electrospun polyurethane/PEDOT: PSS nanofibers

Abstract: Extremely elastic and sensitive strain gauge sensors are highly demanded to keep track of strains in flexible electronics, skin deformation, and human movement. This report discusses a new approach to fabricate a stretchable, electrically conductive and sensitive strain gauge sensor which uses a polymeric nanofibrous composite of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer and conductive poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) polymer as its basis. The nanofibrous composite was p… Show more

“…In this case, a large resistance change is observed upon stretching, which is however quite totally recovered upon relaxation. This property could be interesting for realizing strain gauges, as done recently with other materials on top of similar substrates (Jang et al, 2019;Shaker et al, 2019).…”

“…These include wound healing [33], filtration [34], and sensors [35]. The polar cyanide group on the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) backbone chain, along with its good mechanical properties, makes it a great candidate for matrix composite nanofibers [36,37,38]. PVDF/TPU porous membrane with the addition of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as hydrophilic polymer was introduced through the phase inversion method for bovine serum albumin (BSA) retention [39].…”

“…The gauge factor (GF, GF = (Δ R/R 0 )/ ε ), calculated by the slope of the colored curve in Figure 3c, can be used to evaluate the sensitivity of the strain sensor [29,30]. The strain of the sensor increased to 50%, showing a moderate GF of ~10.…”
