Droughts, a temporary imbalance of water availability due to natural cycles, and water scarcity, linked to water demand, are interrelated conditions that highlight the impending need of interventions to build water resource resilience and sustainability in the face of the future scenarios uncertainty. Many water systems in developed and developing countries alike are not sufficiently resilient to the combined effects of ongoing changes in the hydrologic cycle, increased urbanization pressures, and governance challenges. These issues are addressed in this paper, summarizing and discussing some of the possible actions that could be implemented for water scarcity mitigation and drought resilience targeted to various sectors and related technologies.
