MicroRNA-141 suppresses growth and metastatic potential of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) serve as regulatory factors in both healthy tissue and various cancers. Here, we used an miRNA microarray to screen for miRNAs differentially expressed between HNSCC and adjacent epithelial tissue. Among these, levels of miR-141 were significantly reduced in HNSCC tissues. Expression levels of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) were enhanced in tissues with low miR-141 expression but were reduced by miR-141 overexpression, and there was a significant negative correlation between EGFR an… Show more

“…Recently, a number of miRNAs have been reported to be dysregulated in various cancer types, including HNSCC 12,13. For instance, miR-141 shows decreased expression in HNSCC tissues and exerts tumor-suppressive roles by inhibiting the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) 14. miR-200 facilitates the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in HNSCC cells and promotes HNSCC progression 15.…”

“…Risk factors for OSCC include alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking and adverse irritation of the oral mucosa ( 2 , 3 ). Although great progress has been made in the treatment of OSCC, the 5-year survival rate has not improved much over the past two decades ( 4 , 5 ). Therefore, further understanding of the pathogenesis of OSCC may help to predict cancer progression and provide novel molecular targets for cancer therapy.…”

“…MicroRNAs are a type of short (approximately 20~25 nucleotide), single-stranded non-coding RNAs, which are generally expressed in a diversity of tissues and cell types and mediate post-transcriptional gene silencing via binding to mRNA 3'UTR (35)(36)(37). Accumulating studies on the biological behaviors of miRNAs in the development, prognosis, proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation have attracted the people's attention (38).…”
