MicroRNA‑153 suppresses human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma migration and invasion by targeting the SNAI1 gene

Abstract: Human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a malignant cancer type. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition marker Snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAI1) is associated with the occurrence, development, invasion and metastasis of numerous tumor types, such as lung, liver and ovarian cancer. Previous studies have indicated that microRNA-153 (miR-153) may serve as a novel tumor suppressor, which is involved in tumor metastasis; however, the role and clinical significance of miR-153 in LSCC are not full… Show more

“…From The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, a number of differentially expressed miRNAs in LSCC have been identified [11]. Several miRNAs, including miR-26a and miR-153, emerged as powerful regulators in LSCC, as indicated in recent studies [12,13]. One major finding of our study is that miR-625 was markedly decreased in LSCC tissue specimens and cell lines.…”

“…Furthermore, miR-153 inhibited migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition of breast cancer by regulating transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway. Zhang et al [15] found that miR-153 suppressed human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma migration and invasion by targeting the Snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAI1) gene.…”

“…Another example of miRNA that is described as a direct regulator of SNAIL expression in plenty tumor types is miR-153. The downregulation of SNAIL by miR-153 suppresses human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma migration and invasion [75], melanoma cells proliferation and invasion [76], esophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression [77], and gastric cancer metastasis [78]; regulates EMT in hepatocellular carcinoma [79]; and diminishes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma migration and invasion with miR-153 serving as a prognostic marker [80].…”
