microRNA‐200a: A stage‐dependent biomarker and predictor of steatosis and liver cell injury in human immunodeficiency virus patients

Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease contributes to liver‐related mortality and has a high prevalence among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The early detection of steatosis could prevent disease progression through life‐style changes. However, as the common serum markers are nonspecific and the gold standard for the detection of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease remains the invasive liver biopsy, its verification is limited. Therefore, the search for novel biomarkers is essential. Several studies … Show more

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a type of endogenous small non-coding RNAs, and microRNAs are related to the development of various diseases (35,36). miRNAs have been found to play a pro-fibrotic or anti-fibrotic role in HSC activation and be in connection with liver fibrosis.…”

“…For detecting steatosis, the liver fat score appears to have higher sensitivity than the liver accumulation product (100 and 89%, respectively), whereas the specificity of the two methods is similar (approximately 83%) 22 . In a recent study, elevated serum microRNA200 levels not only predicted the presence of hepatic steatosis but were also associated with increased risk for progression of steatosis during a 1-year follow-up 23 . On the other hand, transient elastography appears to have very good sensitivity and specificity for identifying fibrosis 24 .…”
