MicroRNA profile in the squamous cell carcinoma: prognostic and diagnostic roles

Abstract: Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are human malignancies associated with both genetic and environmental factors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) as a group of small non-coding RNAs have prominent roles in the development of this kind of cancer. Expressions of several miRNAs have been demonstrated to be increased in HNSCC samples vs. non-malignant tissues. In silico prediction tools and functional analyses have confirmed the function of some miRNAs in the modulation of cancer-associated targets, thus indicatin… Show more

“…The eight overlapping miRNAs between HNSC and CESC groups were previously discussed as genes related to cancer. High plasma level of hsa-mir-142 were reported as a HPV-independent prognostic marker of combined radio-chemotherapy in HNSC patients [ 23 ], and its expression correlated with the inhibition of cell proliferation and chemoresistance in ovarian cancer cell lines [ 24 ]. Induced overexpression of hsa-mir-150 inhibited cell invasion and metastasis in ovarian cancer [ 25 ].…”

“…Previous studies constructed a prognostic stratification system from multiple perspectives, such as immunity-related gene-based signature, 15 microRNA-based signature, 16 , 17 and microenvironment-based system. 18 Few studies focused on EMT-related gene-based signature.…”

“…HNSCC are collocated at the sixth position among more diffuse malignant tumors in the world [17], being characterized by a poor prognosis, mainly due to metastases, the development of multiple primary tumors, and local and regional, often inoperable, relapses [18,19]. The presence of distant metastases at the moment of diagnosis is associated with a high mortality rate for HNSCC [20], since the chemotherapy used for metastatic disease gives often low responses [21,22].…”
