MicroRNAs

Abstract: The discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs) in 1993 followed by developments and discoveries in small RNA biology have redefined the biological landscape by significantly altering the longstanding dogmas that defined gene regulation. These small RNAs play a significant role in modulation of an array of physiological and pathological processes ranging from embryonic development to neoplastic progression. Unique miRNA signatures of various inherited, metabolic, infectious, and neoplastic diseases have added a new dimens… Show more

“…9, 10 Supporting this theory, essential roles for miRNAs have been discovered in most cellular processes, including cell proliferation, development, differentiation, and apoptosis. 1114 Moreover, aberrant miRNA expression has emerged as a hallmark of human diseases, starting with cancers but now including cardiovascular disease and inflammatory lung disease. 1518 Most reported miRNA expression patterns in humans come from miRNA detection in cells or tissue from the target organs of disease, including the global downregulation of miRNA expression in alveolar macrophages and bronchial alveolar epithelium from smokers.…”

“…using animal models for human medicine). Although organ-and breed/species-specific miRNA signatures have been documented in various domestic and non-domestic animals, studies that have directly addressed diseases or physiological dysfunctions specific to companion, avian, and exotic animals are extremely limited (6).…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRs) are small noncoding RNAs that play important roles in gene expression by inhibiting translation or inducing target molecules degradation 19-21. MiRs also have roles in the functions of the healthy and diseased heart, such as cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, myocardial fibrosis, cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure 22-26.…”
