MicroRNAs and Diabetes Mellitus Type 1

Abstract: : Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial, progressive, autoimmune disease with a strong genetic feature that can affect multiple organs, including kidney, eyes, and nerves. Early detection of type 1 diabetes can help critically to avoid serious damages to these organs. MicroRNAs are small RNA molecules that act in post-transcriptional gene regulation by attaching to the complementary sequence in the 3'-untranslated region of their target genes. Alterations in the expression of microRNA coding genes are e… Show more

“…Furthermore, histone modifications have shown their influence on immune response gene dysregulation in the context of T1D (72). The role of microRNAs, another facet of epigenetics, has also been underscored, particularly in controlling immune and inflammatory responses in T1D (61,(73)(74)(75)(76). Epigenetic alterations associated with T1D risk not only hold implications for biomarker discovery but also open doors to precision medicine strategies in T1D diagnosis, risk assessment, and therapeutic intervention.…”

“…[13,14] microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs, which are involved in many physiological and pathological processes, and their role in type 1 diabetes as an autoimmune disease is welldocumented. [15] miRNAs enhance or inhibit inflammation under pathological conditions. miRNAs bind to TLRs and regulate TLRmediated inflammatory responses through different mechanisms.…”
