MicroRNAs Dysregulation as Potential Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Endometriosis

Abstract: Endometriosis is a benign chronic disease in women that is characterized by the presence of active foci of the endometrium or endometrial tissue occurring outside of the uterus. The disease causes disabling symptoms such as pelvic pain and infertility, which negatively affect a patient’s quality of life. In addition, endometriosis imposes an immense financial burden on the healthcare system. At present, laparoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing the disease because other non-invasive diagnostic tests have… Show more

“…Involved in almost all diseases, they have also been investigated in the pathophysiology of endometriosis [ 2 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 47 ]. Some miRNAs regulate the epithelial-mesenchymal transition [ 48 ], essential for the dissemination of epithelial cells. Others would modulate the hormonal environment (miRNAs -23a and -23b, miRNAs -:135a, 135b, 29c, and 194 −3p) via their interaction with SF1.…”

“…This ncRNA has the potential to be a diagnostic biomarker for the EMS. However, no specific miRNA has been transmitted from the laboratory to the clinic for diagnostic purposes in EMS ( 18 , 62 ). Although being a diagnostic biomarker has been studied more, miRNAs can control the progression of the disease by affecting various determining mechanisms.…”

“…A recent study suggests that four miRNAs could be included as a prognostic marker in endometriosis 7 . However, future clinical studies should evaluate the efficacy of these miRNAs in endometriosis diagnosis and treatment 8 .…”
