Microscopic anatomy of the ovary ofAlouatta caraya

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The microscopic structure of the Alouatta caraya ovary is studied in different ages and reproductive stages. The most significant feature seems to be the presence in adult ovaries of abundant glandular interstitial tissue which occupies both the cortex and medulla. It seems to be derived from the theca interna of atretic follicles. Discrete luteinized masses are present in the medulla in all the ovaries observed. Invaginations of the surface epithelium are seen only in infant and juvenile ovaries. Th… Show more

“…This feature has also been found in other genera and species of neotropical primates [Castellanos & McCombs, 1968;Eckstein, 1958;Guraya, 1968Guraya, , 1974Hertig et al, 1971;Wislocki, 1939], and is similar to the description of auxiliary corpora lutea found in Macaca [Koering, 1969]. More recently, Claver et al [1984a] described the ovary microanatomy of captive black howler monkeys and the most significant feature again was the presence of abundant glandular interstitial tissue in both the cortex and medulla. The presence of these cells has long been recognized in mammalian ovaries.…”

“…The choice of this animal was based on the fact that the genus Alouatta is one of the most difficult New World monkeys to breed and rear in captivity [Claver et al, 1984a;Colillas & Coppo, 1978].…”

“…However, there are few references in the literature related to the ultrasonographic evaluation of ovaries in NHPs, especially Neotropical species. The available studies are related primarily to the macro and microscopic descriptions of the ovaries (Claver et al 1984;Dempsey 1939;Eckstein 1958;Guraya 1968;Hayama et al 1997;Hertig et al 1971Hertig et al , 1976Wislocki 1939). Based on our literature review, our study was the first to evaluate owl monkey ovaries using ultrasound.…”
