The damage process in CFRP cross ply laminates under lateral impact loading by mean of falling tup was clarified with special emphasis on the effects of falling height and shape of supporting plates. The upper and lower side delaminations were observed using acoustic scanning microscope (SAM), and the area of delamination shape was measured using an image processor. It was found that the drop height influenced the area of lower side delamination and the drop mass influenced the area of upper side delamination. Based on the experimental results, the process of impact damage was supposed, subsequently a stochastic simulation model to describe the damage process was developed. The results of simulation are qualitatively similar to the experimental results.
