Microscopic studies on postmortem vermiform appendix of the adult males of Bangladesh

Abstract: The overall number of mucosal glands showed a tendency towards a positive correlation with age. The overall luminal diameter and the overall number of germinal centres showed a tendency towards a negative correlation with the age. However, none of the tendencies of correlation reached statistically any significant level.

“…The higher incidence of AA in the young adults may be closely associated with these structural components that changes with age. In Bakar's study [14], it has been reported that the diameter of the appendix vermiformis and the overall number of germinal centers show a negative correlation with the age of the subjects. Although the authors thought that higher frequency of AA is not related with the luminal diameter of the appendix vermiformis and the number of mucosal glands, they recommended further studies to find out the correlation between the number of germinal centers and the incidences of AA in association with the different age groups.…”

“…Therefore, AA in the elderly is a controversial issue that necessitates further pathophysiological explanation. The lymphoid structure of the appendix vermiformis begins to decrease in the early adulthood, and atrophied and obliterated at the older ages [14]. Additionally, the size of the appendix vermiformis begins to decrease from the early adulthood.…”

“…5 Appendix has irregular lumen due to lymphoid nodules and mucosal glands range from42-130 in number at different age groups. 6 The histological differentiation of vermiform appendix shows that it is a specialized organ. 7 At different age groups the circular, longitudinal muscular layers and sub mucosa varies in thickness considerably.…”

“…And because of lymphatic follicle number decreasing with advances of age, the appendix weight also decreases and the area will be replaced by connective tissues (Rahman, et al, 2008). At different ages, the lumen has various shape and size, because of the changes of lymphatic follicles number, as well as the number of mucosal glands also varied (Bakar et al,2016). This study aimed to diagnose the age and sexrelated changes of the wall thickness, lumen diameter, number of lymphoid follicles and its diameter for male and female histomorphometrically.…”
