Microservices architecture's popularity is rapidly growing as it eases the design of enterprise applications by allowing independent development and deployment of services. Due to this paradigm shift in software development, many existing Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) applications are being migrated to microservices. Estimating the effort required for migration is a key challenge as it helps the architects in better planning and execution of the migration process. Since the designing style and deployment environments are different for each service, existing effort estimation models in the literature are not ideal for microservice architecture. To estimate the effort required for migrating SOA application to microservices, we propose a new effort estimation model called Service Points. We define a formal model called service graph which represents the components of the service based architectures and their interactions among the services. Service graph provides the information required for the estimation process. We recast the use case points method and model it to become suitable for microservices architecture. We have updated the technical and environmental factors used for the effort estimation. The proposed approach is demonstrated by estimating the migration effort for a standard SOA based web application. The proposed model is compatible with the design principles of microservices and provides a systematic and formal way of estimating the effort. It helps software architects in better planning and execution of the migration process.

Microservices has emerged as a new architectural style of designing applications to overcome the challenges of service oriented architecture (SOA). With the evolution of microservices architecture, architects have started migrating legacy applications to microservices. However, some of the architects are in chaos whether to migrate the application from SOA to microservices or not. The need for empirical evaluation and comparison of both the SOA and microservices architecture is also on-demand. This work helps the software architects in better understanding of the technical differences between both styles. We, therefore, present a comparison of a web application that is designed using both SOA and microservices architectures. The comparison is presented with two different parameters: 1) complexity with architectural metrics; 2) performance with load testing. It is clear from the results that though the complexity of microservices architecture is high, the response time for processing the requests is very fast compared to SOA services.

The microservices architecture (MSA) is a form of distributed systems architecture that has been widely adopted in large-scale software systems in recent years. As with other distributed system architectures, one of the challenges that MSA faces is establishing trust between the microservices, particularly in the context of open systems. The boundaries of open systems are unlimited and unknown, which means they can be applied to any use case. Microservices can leave or join an open system arbitrarily, without restriction as to ownership or origin, and scale extensively. The organisation of microservices (in terms of the roles they play and the communication links they utilise) can also change in response to changes in the environment that the system is situated in. The management of trust within MSAs is of great importance as the concept of trust is critical to microservices communication, and the operation of an open MSA system is highly reliant on communication between these fine-grained microservices. Thus, a trust model should also be able to manage trust in an open environment. Current trust management solutions, however, are often domain-specific and many are not specifically tailored towards the open system model. This motivates research on trust management in the context of open MSA systems. In this paper, we examine existing microservices trust models, identify the limitations of these models in the context of the principles of open microservices systems, propose a set of qualities for open microservices trust models that emerge from these limitations, and assess selected microservices trust models using the proposed qualities.
