ABSTRACTFifty years ago, the Third Symposium on the USAF Research and Development Program was held at Robert Allerton Park. During this symposium Deschamps and Sichak, working for the Federal Telecommunications Laboratory, presented their work entitled "Microstrip Microwave Antennas." Here we commemorate this now declassified work, often cited as the "first microstrip antenna paper," by reflecting upon it in the light of significant advances in microstrip antenna theory and design that have sprung from the pages of the Symposia proceedings since. We conclude with a discussion of the future of microstrip antennas and related structures.
