“…The hardness of the reinforced samples increases with the amount of ZrB 2 and reaches 812 ± 94 HV 0.2 for the 40 wt.% ZrB 2 sample, while the hardness of the 40 wt.% TiB 2 sample is about 967 ± 104 HV 0.2 . The above values are comparable with the hardness of IMCs produced via SHS in other studies [10,17,21]. The hardness of the samples confirms the suitability of these powders for hard coatings.…”

“…SHS is a technique that takes advantage of the high exothermic energy of some inorganic reactions to generate high-temperature and fast combustion reactions. Some of the advantages of SHS, with respect to many traditional solid state synthetic routes, are the high purity of the products, short process times (typically on the order of few second or less), and the low energy consumption (limited to the ignition step), as well as low cost of the experimental apparatus [21,22]. SHS has been successfully used in the last 30 years for the production of several materials including ceramics, intermetallics, and composites [22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…So far, porous NiTi SMAs have been fabricated with powder metallurgy (PM) processes such as combustion synthesis with selfpropagating wave [5][6][7], metal injection molding (MIP) [8], hot isostatic pressing (HIP) [8], and spark plasma sintering (SPS) [9]. These processes can avoid the problems associated with casting, like segregation or extensive grain growth and have the added advantages of precise control of composition and easy realization of complex part shapes.…”
