Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Narrow Gap Laser-Arc Hybrid Welded 40 mm Thick Mild Steel

Abstract: Both laser-arc hybrid welding and narrow gap welding have potential for the fabrication of thick sections, but their combination has been seldom studied. In this research, 40 mm thick mild steel was welded by narrow gap laser-arc hybrid welding. A weld with smooth layer transition, free of visible defects, was obtained by nine passes at a 6 mm width narrow gap. The lower part of the weld has the lowest mechanical properties because of the lowest amount of acicular ferrite, but its ultimate tensile strength and… Show more

“…In the process of HLDAW, the liquid metal flow in the molten pool was different from that of DAW because of the addition of the laser, as shown in Figure 10b. The depression of the weld pool surface becomes larger because of the laser beam and transforms to a keyhole, the entire central core of which consists of vapor surrounded on all sides by an envelope of liquid metal [28]. The reaction force produced by vapor ejected upward from the keyhole facilitates the molten metal flowing toward the bottom of the molten pool.…”

“…In this regard, it is worth mentioning that there are numerous research lines aimed at the application of this technology to different industrial sectors, which includes not only shipbuilding (sector where its application is most evident) but also the aeronautical industry, offshore, railroad or nuclear industry. The European Union is aware of the possibilities offered by hybrid welding in the naval industry, so that currently there are numerous funded research projects trying to address different aspects of this technology for its full implementation in the industry [49][50][51][52].…”

“…The combination of arc metal welding with laser beam welding has been introduced into practice at a particularly quick speed (shipbuilding and automobile construction) and is reflected in the expectation of a higher degree of utilization in the industrial practice. Prior studies [49,50,[59][60][61][62] have noted the importance of the fitting stage parameters. The combination results in very positive characteristics such as high energy density and low thermal load, high welding speed, deep penetration and high tensile strength, bridging capacity of gap and the possibility of the addition of filler metal and metal microstructure modification.…”
