X-ray computed tomography is an efficient method for quantitatively estimating the characteristics and heterogeneity of shales in three dimensions. A threshold is commonly used to separate pore-fractures from the background image. However, few studies have focused on the multicomponent segmentation of computed tomography images. To obtain the distribution characteristics of different components in three dimensions, a segmentation method was proposed that combines a multi-Otsu thresholding algorithm with scanning electron microscopy. The gray value distributions of different components were first determined using this method. Then, the shale components were divided into several groups based on these gray values. The threshold of each component group was determined using the multi-Otsu thresholding algorithm. The computed tomography image stacks of two shale samples were processed using this segmentation method, and another computed tomography image stack was used to verify the method. In order to develop an inhibitive water-based mud capable of mitigating the adverse effects of shale-mud interactions, it is important to characterize the shale sample in terms of its geological structure, mineralogical composition, reactivity potential, etc. Further, the shale-mud interactions should be studied through a series of experimental tests such as swelling, dispersion and inhibition durability.This paper presents the results of characterization and testing of one of the studied shale samples with X-ray diffraction, micro-CT, ultrasonic rock mechanics testing, capillary suction time and cation exchange capacity. The paper also shows how petrophysics data of shale formations can be utilized to improve and optimize drilling practices in order to achieve the ultimate goal of enhanced wellbore stability. Depending on clay content, different shale formations have different responses when exposed to drilling fluids. It is therefore very important to characterize the shale formation to develop the appropriate drilling fluid.The tested shale sample was found to be a silica-rich shale with a small percentage of clay minerals, mainly kaolinite. Characterization scheme included also Micro-CT where the images revealed the heterogeniety and fractures in the internal matrix. Dynamic elastic moduli were determined using ultrasonic rock mechanics testing. A cation exchange capacity (CEC) value of 2.5 meq and capillary suction time (CST) value of 42.6 seconds indicated low tendency of the shale rock to both swelling and dispersion.

Brittleness of rocks plays an important role in the evaluation of unconventional oil and gas reservoir network fracturing and many rock engineering application fields. However, there is still no commonly accepted definition of the concept of brittleness. In this study, the brittleness differences between rocks are understood as the differences of internal microunit strength cracking characteristics under an external load. Because rock ruptures are regarded as a fracturing problem of a double body system, the region where no cracking occurs during the uniaxial compression loading process is regarded as a body I system with elastic deformation characteristics; the region that breaks first and induces the integral fracture of the rock is regarded as a body II system in which the structural strength of the microunit follows the deformation characteristic of the Weibull distribution. An energy quasi‐static equilibrium equation for rock fractures of a double body system under an external load was established. A new index for evaluating brittleness was established based on the energy mutation process of the quasi‐static equilibrium equation of double body system. Sandstone, red sandstone, mudstone, sandy mudstone, shale, limestone, and granite were selected as the research objects, while the correlation curve between the new brittleness index, the Weibull distribution characteristic parameters, and the mutation break point was calculated. The brittleness index studied in this paper reveals the evolution process of integral fractures induced by the internal fractures of rocks, which is important for further understanding the essence of brittleness. These results can provide a new method for further studying the formation process of local fracture networks.
