Microstructure and property of WC/steel matrix composites

Abstract: Steel matrix composites (SMCs) with 5CrNiMo steel as matrix and tugnsten carbide (WC) particles as hard phase were prepared by inductive electroslag casting technology. The influence of annealing, forging state and quenching tempering state on the microstructures of the particle-reinforced SMCs were investigated by metallographic analysis method. The particle composition and the composition change of the boundary were tested by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with the scanning electron microscope, and the… Show more

“…For this reason, one of the main objectives of the study is to develop a theoretical and practical basis for the development of technology for obtaining metals that meet the specific requirements of the existing industry, and at the same time having a relatively low cost. The solution to this problem is the rational design of steels by providing the necessary properties only to those amounts of metal that are subjected to specific effects, which is achieved by using a small amount of properly selected ultradisperse powders (Brown, 2014;Camagu, 2020;Parashivamurthy, 2014;Sobula, 2017;Zhang, 2015), and their location in specified volumes -on the working surface or in other volumes of the product that need specific properties. In other words, this can be characterised as the creation of materials with a controlled gradient of properties (Fernandes, 2017;El-Hadad, 2011;Kiviö, 2016;Watanabe, 2009Watanabe, , 2017.…”

“…Successful design and development of MMCs with superior properties remains a foremost research area by which existing conventional materials can be replaced in many engineering applications under severe operating conditions. The overall properties of MMCs can be controlled by the appropriate selection of reinforcement, shape, size, orientation and content of the reinforcement, nature of bonding between the matrix and reinforcement [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Although 5CrNiMoV steel has been widely used in industrial applications, the hot deformation process of the steel has been less investigated and only little information on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior or flow stress behavior of the steel has been reported. So far, the influence of annealing, forging state, and quenching tempering state on the microstructures of steel matrix composites (SMCs) with 5CrNiMo steel as matrix was investigated by the metallographic analysis method [18]. e changes in strength, hardness, and impact ductility of 5CrNiMo steel after the addition of different contents of RE La element were investigated [19].…”
