Microstructure and Rheological Properties of Semi-Solid 7075 Slurries Using SEED Rheocasting Process

Abstract: The SEED rheocasting process was used to produce semisolid slurries of high strength 7075 aluminum wrought alloys. The effects of the SEED processing parameters on the microstructure of semisolid slurries were studied. The impact of grain refinement on the grain morphology and size was investigated. The rheological properties of semisolid 7075 alloys were characterized at different solid fractions using a parallel plate compression viscometer. Results indicated that the grain refinement could greatly improve t… Show more

“…In the rheo-route, raw material is melted and then treated by the special technology to obtain spherical or near-spherical aluminum particles directly. The special technology includes Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device (SEED) [20][21][22][23], Enthalpy Control Process (ECP) [24,25], Gas Induced Semi-Solid (GISS) [26][27][28][29][30], Rapid Slurry Formation (RSF/RheoMetal) [31 -33], Cooling Slope (CS) [34 -36], Air-Cooled Stirring Rod Device (ACSR) [37][38][39] and others.…”

“…Figure 3b shows this flow behavior schematically. Rheological behavior experiments and fluidity test results illustrated that the 7075 Al slurries can flow quite well even at medium initial solid fractions [64,87,88]. The unique slurry containing fine and solid particles resulting in fine microstructure is in demand as an alternative to the coarse microstructure of conventional manufacturing.…”

“…Power-Law (PL), Herschel-Bulkley (HB), Cross and Carreau-Yasuda (CY) models are usually used to script the relationship between slurry's viscosity and shear rate [4][5][6][7]. X.-Grant Chen studied the rheological properties of 7075 aluminum alloy semi-solid slurry with high the solid fraction of 40% ~ 60% by using rapid compression test [8]. This work studied the rheological behavior of 7075 aluminum alloy semi-solid slurry with the solid fraction of 0% ~ 30% in both shear stress-controlled test and shear rate-controlled test by using rotational rheometer.…”
