Microstructure Characterization and Corrosion Resistance of Zinc Coating Obtained in a Zn-AlNiBi Galvanizing Bath

Abstract: The article examines the impact of the addition of Al, Ni, and Bi to a zinc bath on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of hot dip galvanizing coatings. The microstructure on the surface and the cross-section of the coatings obtained in the Zn-AlNiBi bath were examined. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was assessed by the standard neutral salt spray test (EN ISO 9227), the sulfur dioxide test in a humid atmosphere (EN ISO 6988), and the electrochemical test. The corrosion resistance of Zn-AlNiB… Show more

“…The cathodic part of the polarization curves again indicated that the corrosion process was under mixed activation-diffusion control, as it was concluded from the impedance spectroscopy. The anodic curves were not related to passivation, and the values of the anodic Tafel slope (50 mV dec -1 ) were in correlation with literature data for zinc-based coatings in NaCl solution 21,28,29 .…”

“…This work presents the results of a detailed theoretical analysis of zinc coatings based on grazing incidence X-ray diffraction technique. The samples grown using the hot-dip galvanizing process [1][2][3][4]8,13,14,16,[18][19][20], chemical vapor deposition by pack cementation [5][6][7][8]13,14,16,[21][22][23][24][25] and wire flame thermal spray [9][10][11][12][13][14]16,[26][27][28] were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Bragg-Brentano and grazing incidence XRD, with specific interest in the composition of the thin zinc oxide layer formed on the surface. The X-rays theoretical penetration depth for all three types of sample was also calculated and compared to the experimental results.…”

“…The Zn galvanizing process is widely investigated, and new regimes with respect to galvanizing temperature or/and chemistry of bath are proposed with respect of their functionality. Kania et al [ 6 ] reported the negative influence of Bi added to a Zn bath on the corrosion resistance due to the presence of Bi precipitates. Li et al [ 7 ] remarkably improved the adhesion of Zn coating after the cold galvanizing by the use of γ-chloropropyl triethoxysilane.…”
