High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) is one of the most important thermal spraying techniques for protective coating on pristine alloy surfaces by cermet feedstock powders. In the article, grit blasting before HVOF coating is replaced by laser texturing to create specific roughness and deterministic cavities pattern for better mechanical interlocking of deposited WC-10Co-4Cr + 3% Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) on AISI 304 Steel Substrate. Two geometries; first one is Circular texturing (CT) of diameter (d) 100 μm and pitch (p) 120 μm, second is triangular texturing (TT) of side (s) 100 μm and side to side (ss) distance 120 μm have been used. Various testing measures; like surface roughness, XRD analysis, FESEM image analysis, EDS analysis, lattice strain and residual stress, scratch test, Vickers hardness test on coating and base substrate cross-section, and pin-on-disc test for sliding wear behaviour have been performed. After these coating characterizations, it was found that the lattice strain and residual stress decreases significantly, the micro-hardness of the cross-section improved, the adhesion strength of the coating was enhanced and a low sliding wear rate on the coated surface was observed. Uniform distribution of feedstock powder on the surface but higher porosity on the TT surface showed by FESEM image analysis and a large number of cracks observed during scratch tests at higher load.

The Overlay welding process is a coating technique that is carried out using the welding process. In this study, a coating was conducted on carbon SA 516 gr. 70 with stainless steel electrodes. Welding was carried out with the GTAW and SMAW processes. The electrode used in the first coating for GTAW was ER309L while for SMAW was E309L. The next coating used in the GTAW electrode was ER316L and the SMAW electrode was E316L. In both welding processes, testing was carried out on mechanical properties and corrosion rates. Testing was carried out to determine mechanical properties, namely bending testing. This was done based on ASME IX. Bending test results in both processes are declared accepted because there are no defects. In testing the corrosion rate using the three-electrode cell method based on the ASTM G102 Overlay welding process with GTAW has a slower corrosion rate of 0.00890 MMPY compared to the overlay welding process with SMAW.

The in-service life of ASTM A36 welded steel pipes in power plants is often shortened by ash corrosion. During the heating condition, the ash deposition on the welded steel pipes gradually reduces the thickness of the pipes, thus, reducing the lifetime. Instead of replacing the pipes with new ones, the cost could be significantly reduced if the lifetime could be further extended. Weld cladding was the method selected in this study to temporarily extend the service life of welded pipes. This paper performed the mechanical investigations of A36—A36 welded steel plates after coating the surfaces with 309L stainless steel with a cladding method. The residual stress was also tested to observe the internal stresses developed during the welding processes of A36—A36 specimens. The comparison between the coated and non-coated surfaces of welded steels was performed by using the tensile tests (at room and elevated temperatures), corrosion (pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and weight-loss corrosion) tests, and wear (shot blasting) tests. The life-extension of both coatings was evaluated based on the tensile tests and the corrosion and wear tests provided the qualitative evaluations of the coating performance. The results showed that surfaces coated by cladding could be used to temporarily extend the life of ASTM A36 welded steel under the studied conditions.
