The Ni-based superalloy Inconel 625 is extensively used owing to its high strength, excellent fabricability, good weldability and outstanding resistance to high temperature corrosion against aggressive environments. However, despite its unique properties and extensive use, its wear resistance is in some cases unsatisfactory. In this study, Inconel 625 was subjected to boriding treatments at different temperature and different durations. Microstructural characterization was made by conventional methods (scanning electron microscopy, optic microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis) and mechanical characterization was made by microhardness and micro-abrasion wear test. Micro-abrasion wear tests were conducted against a AISI 52100 steel under 5, 7.5 and 10 N load in a 25 wt.% SiC slurry at room temperature. Microstructural results revealed that multi-phase boride layer (nickel boride, chrome boride and iron boride) and silicide layer were formed. The hardness and thickness of the boride layers were found to be 1175-2432 HV 0.1 and, 6.61-92.03 μm, respectively. Depending on the boriding temperature and time. In spite of silicide layer formation the wear resistance of borided Inconel 625 alloy increased up to 8 times thanks to the increase in the surface hardness which was caused by boriding process. The boriding treatment caused a transition in the wear mechanism. While grooving was observed in the untreated Inconel 625 samples, mixed (grooving and rolling) and rolling type wear was predominant in the borided samples.

Optimization of Friction Behavior Characteristics by Coating with Solid Lubricants

Increasing the lifetime of machine elements whose operation involves the development of friction processes and diminishing energy losses by friction can be achieved by using solid lubricants. In this regard, a method applied to improve the friction behavior of machine elements is electrostatic coating of the surfaces of interest with polyester layers that include particles of solid lubricants, such as molybdenum disulfide or graphite. Experimental research was conducted to highlight the influence of normal force, the concentration of solid lubricant particles in polyester, and specific sliding between surfaces involved in the friction process on the deposited layer’s lifetime and on the friction coefficient. Grey analysis was employed to identify sets of input factors that would lead to the most convenient values of the lifetime and energy friction losses when using polyester layers that incorporate molybdenum or graphite particles. Specialized software was elaborated in a MATLAB environment to use the grey relational analysis in identifying the optimal values of the process input factors for distinct weights of the output parameters.

The in‐situ V8C7‐V3B4/Fe45 composites were fabricated by vacuum sintering using ferrovanadium, carbon black and Fe45 alloy powders as raw materials. The microstructure, phase structure and hardness of sintered Fe45+x wt.% (FeV+C) composite specimens (x = 0, x = 5, x = 10, x = 15, x = 20) were investigated. The results show that the type and shape of in‐situ borides and carbides depend on the content of (FeV+C) mixed powders. When x = 5, the composite consists of α‐(Fe, Cr, V) solid solution, strip M7C3 carbides and block M2B borides. When x = 10, the V3B4 particles initiate inside the M2B borides by in‐situ precipitation, and the excess vanadium reacts with carbon to in‐situ form V8C7 particles. When x≥15, the M2B completely transform into V3B4. Furthermore, the V8C7 and V3B4 particles coarsened and tended to be spheroidal and rectangle shape respectively. The V3B4 particles coarsen possibly by contacting and merging of the small V3B4 particles. However, the V8C7 particles coarsen possibly by the Ostwald ripening. The hardness of the composites increases firstly and then decreases with the increase of (FeV+C) mixed powders. The Fe45+10 wt.% (FeV+C) composite has the highest hardness value (54.2 HRC), which is due to the fine boride and carbide reinforcement and little pore defect.
