Some green extraction methods were selected and tested for the extraction of volatile compounds from different samples of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris: ultrasound‐assisted liquid–liquid extraction using environment‐friendly solvents (LLE) and solid‐phase microextraction (SPME). The obtained profiles of volatile chemical compounds were different. Only one molecule was found in common to both extractions. Using the SPME method, the main chemical classes of identified volatile compounds were sulfuric compounds, aldehydes, and alcohols. Using the LLE method, the volatile profile was more balanced with alkanes, fatty acids, terpenes, alcohols, and aldehydes. Multivariate data analyses permitted discrimination among samples. Additionally, the relationship between the physicochemical properties of identified volatile compounds and the methods of extraction was studied. The results showed that the LLE extraction allowed the extraction of volatile compounds having a high boiling point (>160°C) and a high log P (>3). The SPME method was more effective to extract volatile compounds with a low boiling point (<160°C) and a low log P (<3). It is thus necessary to combine several extraction methods to obtain a complete view of the volatile profile for microalgae samples.

Background: Due to the complexities involved in the extraction of micropollutants, the information regarding micropollutants like paraben in wastewater and sludge is scarce. The aim of this study was to adopt a microwave-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid micro-extraction (MADLLME) method for the extraction of parabens in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Methods: A mixed stock solution of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butyl-parabens with concentration of 10 mg/mL were prepared in methanol. To validate this method, the limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), linearity, and m/z were measured. To adopt this method in different condition, the effect of pH (3, 7, 9, and 12), microwave power (180, 300, 450, and 600 W), solvent type (methanol, acetone, methanol/water, acetone/water), and 1 g folorisil were assessed. After adopting MADLLME method, the paraben fate of this WWTP was evaluated through mass loading and emission. Results: The optimum performance of MADLLME method was observed at pH = 7, microwave power = 450 W, reaction time = 30 s, and methanol as the solvent. The total concentrations of four paraben metabolites in the WWTP ranged between 2505 ng/L in influent, 1953 ng/L in effluent, and 8.03 ng/g at wet weight sludge samples. The total mass loading and emission of four parabens in this WWTP was 0.672 mg/d/1000 people and 0.186 mg/d/1000 people, respectively. Conclusion: MADLLME method seems to be an excellent alternative, as a green extraction technique, for determining various groups of emerging micropollutants in different matrices.

Extraction and Pre-concentration of Phthalic Acid Esters from Aqueous Solutions using Agitation-assisted Dispersed Binary Solvents Microextraction

As the search for efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly extraction methods continues, miniaturized solvent techniques are receiving considerable attention due to their simplicity, efficiency and fast extraction rates. Herein we report application of a modified dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction through the introduction of a second extracting solvent in place of a disperser solvent leading to a much improved organic solvent recovery after the extraction of phthalic acid esters from aqueous solutions. The method employs a 75 µL binary mixture of ethylacetate and tetrachloromethane with a 3:1 ratio, extraction time of 20 seconds, and 10 % NaCl. The method demonstrates sufficient linearity (R 2 ³ 0.9866) and repeatability (%RSD £ 12.5, for n = 15) with the estimated LOD in the range (0.01-0.05 ng mL -1 ) using the S/N approach. The method demonstrated significant enrichment factors averaging about 2100 with headspace and about 3000 and increase of over 40 % without headspace, indicating the importance of reduced headspace volume in this approach, especially if the ionic strength is increased. However, the method yielded a significantly wide range of recoveries (65-115 %) when applied to the analysis of spiked soil samples when coupled to hot-water extraction. However, this may not be entirely attributable to the extraction approach but rather heat-induced hydrolysis during the hot-water dissolution, prior to the proposed organic extraction method.
