Microwave‐assisted hydrodistillation of juniper berry essential oil: kinetic modeling and chemical composition

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) has widely been used to isolate essential oil from various plant materials, but it has not been applied yet to extract essential oil from juniper berries. The main goals of the present work were to establish a model describing the extraction kinetics and the chemical composition of the essential oil obtained. RESULTS: A lower final essential oil yield from juniper berries was obtained by MAHD than by conventional hydrodistillation (HD). No significant dif… Show more

“…The findings above show the presence of natural antioxidant phenolic compounds in pine bark waste with a good performance since the SFME antioxidant activity can be favourably compared with that of BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) (93.2%) known as a very efficient synthetic antioxidant agent and widely used in food technology. The good antioxidant activity of SFME extracts may be attributed to the presence of a higher quantity of oxygenated monoterpenes and in lesser extent monoterpene hydrocarbons> (Park and Lee, 2011).…”

“…Endothelial cells can undergo a process called EndMT under inflammation, characterized by the loss of endothelial characteristics and the acquisition of fibroblast-like phenotypes, which eventually re-differentiate into osteogenic potential cells under the guidance of various stimuli such as BMPs ( Figure 1A ) ( Pavićević et al, 2016 ; Sanchez-Duffhues et al, 2019 ). The BMP-Smad signaling pathway plays an important role in EndMT ( Figure 2 ).…”

“…Differences among qualitative chemical compositions of the two mixtures of all collected fractions were negligible. However, their quantitative chemical compositions differed only slightly, which could be attributed to different time durations of essential oil extraction under various process conditions [23]. The HD and SHDR mixtures are mostly composed of α-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, p-cymene, 1-terpinen-4-ol, γ-muurolene, etc.…”
