Microwave-Generated Steam Decontamination of N95 Respirators Utilizing Universally Accessible Materials

Abstract: 1The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused a severe, international shortage of N95 2 respirators, which are essential to protect healthcare providers from infection. Given the 3 contemporary limitations of the supply chain, it is imperative to identify effective means 4 of decontaminating, reusing, and thereby conserving N95 respirator stockpiles. To be 5 effective, decontamination must result in sterilization of the N95 respirator without 6 impairment of respirator filtration or user fit. Although numerous methods o… Show more

“…Throughout the pandemic, a number of academic institutions have collaborated with industry partners to find effective methods to decontaminate medical grade PPE with varying degrees of success [4,5]. Here, we have used a commercial ozone disinfection cabinet to test the effect of two different ozone treatments on the survival of the MS2 bacteriophage.…”

“…Here, we have used a commercial ozone disinfection cabinet to test the effect of two different ozone treatments on the survival of the MS2 bacteriophage. A non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus, the MS2 bacteriophage has been proposed as a conservative surrogate for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as nonenveloped viruses are more resistant to decontamination than enveloped, lipid viruses [5,6].…”

“…In [43] a microwave-oven steam treatment for 3 minutes attained similar results. In [44] a gauze-type surgical mask retained good filtering efficiency of about 0.78, at its most-penetrating particle size, after decontamination using a 3 minute dry heat (rice-cooker) at roughly 155 C.…”
