Mid-Column Pounding of Multi-Story Reinforced Concrete Buildings considering Soil Effects

Abstract: In this paper an analysis of seismic pounding of reinforced concrete buildings with non-equal story heights including soil-structure interaction is presented. Two building configurations, configuration A: 10-story and 9-story buildings and configuration B: two 5-story buildings, are considered. The discrete model is used to incorporate foundation-soil interaction and pounding between buildings is incorporated through impact elements that consist of a gap element and a Kelvin-Voigt element. The responses of the… Show more

“…The magnitude of the tensile loading 643 depends on both the level of element damping and the relative velocity of the collision. Variations on the Kelvin Voight element, such as the no tension variation by Shakya et al [14], address this inaccuracy ( Figure 2). However, these variations invalidate the assumptions made when relating the coefficient of restitution to the collision element damping ratio.…”

“…A solution scheme was proposed and the correlation between numerical and analytical results was found to be satisfactory. Shakya and Wijeyewickrema [31] presented the analysis of seismic pounding of reinforced concrete buildings of various heights, including the aspects of soil-structure interaction. Two configurations of buildings were considered and pounding between structures was modelled by impact Kelvin-Voigt elements.…”

“…Numerous literatures have focused on analysing structures of earthquake-induced pounding. Some research [7][8][9][10][11] involves poundings between adjacent buildings. For example, Jankowski [7] analysed the parametric pounding of two buildings with the same number of stories.…”
