Midterm Outcomes of Autologous Cultivated Limbal Stem Cell Transplantation With or Without Penetrating Keratoplasty

Abstract: Transplantation of autologous stem cells cultivated on AM with or without subsequent PKP seems to be an effective way for visual rehabilitation in total LSCD. More work with more cases and longer follow-up are needed to optimize this procedure to provide and maintain an adequate supply of limbal stem cells in these patients.

“…Daya et al [2005] performed punctal occlusion in all cases prior to limbal stem cell transplantation to aid ocular lubrication. Three studies described complications of surgery related to exposure or lid deformities that had not been corrected preoperatively [Baradaran-Rafii et al, 2010;Koizumi et al, 2001a;Pauklin et al, 2010]. Meller et al [2009] did not perform cultured limbal epithelial transplantation initially due to dry eye in one patient but it was performed later as this parameter improved through systemic therapy.…”

“…Over the past decade, cultured limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation (CLET) has been widely accepted as a standard approach for the ocular surface reconstruction of patients with LSCD. (Pellegrini et al 1997 ;Schwab et al 2000 ;Tsai et al 2000a , b ;Sangwan et al 2005 ;Baradaran-Rafi i et al 2010 ;Kolli et al 2010 ;Mariappan et al 2010 ). Cultured limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET) followed by penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) has resulted in long term graft survival and improved visual outcome (Sangwan et al 2005 ) (Fig.…”

“…[1][2][3]4 In unilateral total LSCD, conjunctival limbal autograft (CLAU) taken from the healthy fellow eye with or without amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) is one of the alternatives. [1][2][3][4][5] There are several case series in the literature about CLAU demonstrating successful anatomical results and visual outcomes of the surgery. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] To the best of our knowledge, reported literature regarding complications of this surgery is limited and sparse.…”
