Migration and diversification of the vagal neural crest

Abstract: Arising within the neural tube between the cranial and trunk regions of the body axis, the vagal neural crest shares interesting similarities in its migratory routes and derivatives with other neural crest populations. However, the vagal neural crest is also unique in its ability to contribute to diverse organs including the heart and enteric nervous system. This review highlights the migratory routes of the vagal neural crest and compares them across multiple vertebrates. We also summarize recent advances in … Show more

“…The embryonic neural crest cells can give rise to islet cell tissue. The vagal neural crest cells play an important role in differentiation of endoderm-derived organs such as the thymus, lungs, and pancreas [14]. Melanocytic differentiation and melanin pigment formation were observed in some pancreatic tumors such as solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPN) [15].…”

“…The vagal NC, which has been described as a transitional population between cranial and trunk NCCs, arises from somites 1 to 7, where both a dorsal and a ventral migration pathway would take place in temporal succession (Kuo & Erickson, ; Le Douarin & Teillet, ; Pomeranz, Rothman, & Gershon, ). It is worth noting that other classifications consider cardiac NC and enteric NC as part of the vagal NC population (Hutchins et al, ). In this review, we will consider the vagal NC as a hybrid population that has shared characteristics with cardiac and trunk NC.…”

“…Neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) are prototypical migratory cells of vertebrate embryos; they emigrate from the dorsal neural tube and, by following stereotyped migratory routes, colonize specific embryonic sites where they generate diverse derivatives including the enteric nervous system (ENS) [ 1 ]. Therefore, NCSCs are very important for the pathogenesis of intestinal neuronal dysplasia, colonic motility disorders, and functional gastrointestinal diseases [ 2 , 3 ].…”
