Migration of extraluminal tracheal ring prostheses after tracheoplasty for treatment of tracheal collapse in a dog

Abstract: Migration of extraluminal tracheal ring prostheses should be included in the differential diagnoses for any dog with dyspnea or persistent coughing after surgical correction of cervical tracheal collapse. Surgical removal of the protruding prosthetic rings, without provision of additional tracheal support, was a viable treatment option in this case.

“…However, none of the dogs in our study required an additional surgical procedure for continued or recurrent tracheal collapse. Migration of extraluminal tracheal ring prostheses has also been previously reported, but no prosthesis migration was observed in our study . Various mortality rates related to respiratory compromise after tracheal ring placement ranging from 9%–26% have been reported .…”

“…Migration of extraluminal prosthetic cervical tracheal rings has been reported in a Yorkshire terrier, with tracheal perforation diagnosed by tracheobronchoscopy . This case, and the case reported here, both presented approximately 2 years following surgical placement of the prostheses, and both implant failures occurred near the thoracic inlet.…”

“…Extraluminal prosthetic rings can be acquired as commercial premade sizes or they can be fabricated and autoclaved from syringe cases, increasing the options of readily available ring sizes for larger dogs. Known complications of tracheal ring prostheses include laryngeal paralysis, tracheal necrosis, pneumothorax, loosening, breakage, and infection . Intraluminal tracheal stents are commercially available, but for larger patients custom sizes may be required which can delay intervention.…”
