Abstract

Migration and globalisation: Therapeutic implications for transcultural psychotherapySummary. Migration and globalisation are challenging issues in transcultural psychotherapy. Migrants deal with possible conflicts in their first culture whilst emerging into their contact culture in different ways, which are underpinned by factors such as family situation, relationships, etc. This process of acculturation applies even to second and third generation migrants. It is accepted that sufficient identification with the contact culture without losing roots of the first culture is best. This strategy is called integration. Transcultural psychotherapists should, apart from being able therapists, have knowledge about different forms of acculturation and include these into their transcultural therapy.
