Mild traumatic brain injury induces transient, sequential increases in proliferation, neuroblasts/immature neurons, and cell survival: a time course study in the male mouse dentate gyrus

Abstract: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are prevalent worldwide. mTBIs can impair hippocampal-based functions such as memory and cause network hyperexcitability of the dentate gyrus (DG), a key entry point to hippocampal circuitry. One candidate for mediating mTBI-induced hippocampal cognitive and physiological dysfunction is injury-induced changes in DG neurogenesis, a process that mediates spatial/contextual memory. There are conflicting results on how TBI impacts DG neurogenesis; this is not surprising given … Show more

“…Also, only two fields of view are assessed for each hippocampal subregion (left and right hemisphere). While the "gold standard" approach for quantifying P10 Iba1+ cells is unbiased stereology [24][25][26] (a technique with which we have extensive experience 16,17,[27][28][29][30] ) the low variability of the data presented here suggest some merit of this cell density measurement approach; further validation is needed, ideally in parallel with stereology and ability to focus through the Z plane. Second, we are assuming that Iba1+ cells are microglia.…”
