milliAmpere: An Autonomous Ferry Prototype

Abstract: In this paper, we summarize the experiences with the autonomous passenger ferry development prototype milliAmpere, which has been used as a test platform in several research projects at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) since 2017. New algorithms for motion planning, motion control, collision avoidance, docking, multi-target tracking and localization have been developed and verified in full-scale experiments with milliAmpere. The infrastructure surrounding milliAmpere includes several s… Show more

“…Several prototypes have been built for environmental monitoring missions and ocean resource exploration [9,10,11,12,13]. Efforts towards autonomous inland ferries are also noteworthy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology developed an autonomous ferry prototype, named the milliAmpere [14]. Building upon the experiences gained from this test bed, the full-scale autonomous ferry milliAmpere2 was successfully launched.…”

“…The milliAmpere2 was featured as the simulated "own-boat" in the simulator. The milliAmpere2 is an autonomous urban passenger ferry designed and built at NTNU, which is based on its successful predecessor, milliAmpere [21] (Figure 1). In the simulator, we recreated the route the ferry traversed during public trials in 2022 (Figure 2).…”
