Millimeter Wave Communications With OAM-SM Scheme for Future Mobile Networks

Abstract: The orbital angular momentum (OAM) technique provides a new degree of freedom for information transmissions in millimeter wave communications. Considering the spatial distribution characteristics of OAM beams, a new OAM spatial modulation (OAM-SM) millimeter wave communication system is first proposed for future mobile networks. Furthermore, the capacity, average bit error probability and energy efficiency of OAM-SM millimeter wave communication systems are analytically derived for performance analysis. Compar… Show more

“…Moreover, as described in Section III, radio OAM can be generated not only by employing antenna arrays, but also by using SPPs or spiral parabolic antennas or other single transmit antennas. Combining OAM with traditional MIMO technology can result in higher capacity gains [154], [155] or provide a more flexible system design [156], [157]. A 2 × 2 antenna aperture architecture, where each aperture multiplexes two OAM modes, is implemented in the 28 GHz band to achieve a 16 Gbit/s transmission rate.…”

“…Because the OAM waves could decrease the spatial correlation of wireless channels, the capacity of OAM-based Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems was shown to be larger than the capacity of the traditional MIMO systems in free space with weak multipath effect [21]. Moreover, the energy efficiency of OAM spatial modulation millimeter wave communication systems was shown to be higher than the energy efficiency of OAM-based MIMO systems [22], which made OAM spatial modulation millimeter wave communication systems more suitable for transmissions in long distances efficiently. In view of the fact that the divergence of OAM-based radio vortex waves is more significant than the divergence of radio plane waves, a new type of bifocal lens antenna was used for transmitting OAM-based signals to reduce the propagation attenuation [23].…”
