MIMO LTE antenna design for laptops based on theory of characteristic modes

Abstract: In this paper the theory of characteristic modes is employed to find eigenvalues and current distributions of all relevant modes on a monocoque laptop chassis in the frequency range below 1 GHz. Based on these results a novel type of antenna (inductive coupler), located in the slot between the lid and the base part of the laptop, which exploits one of the characteristic modes is introduced and its performance optimized for the LTE low-and mid-band frequency range. In order to design a MIMO antenna system an ad… Show more

“…The spectrum refarming from GSM 1800 to LTE 1800 is very cost effective. A lot of researches have been done to develop LTE antennas [ 4 , 5 ], but there is lack of research for LTE 1800 MIMO antenna. As the deployments of LTE 1800 continue to accelerate, the development and optimization of LTE 1800 antenna are beneficial to meet the modern demands of wireless terminals.…”

“…Apart from fulfilling impedance bandwidth requirements, achieving a low correlation coefficient in a diversity or MIMO array is a challenge, especially at low frequencies. In contrast to www.ietdl.org extensive research on bandwidth enhancement methods, studies on correlation of wideband internal laptop cellular/ WLAN antenna arrays are rarely seen [20][21][22][23]. So far, only a few generic narrow-band isolation techniques, for example, wave traps [24,25], decoupling networks [26] (of which the neutralisation line [27] is a special case) and coupling elements for field cancellation [28], have been investigated.…”
