Mimosine Toxicity in Broiler Chicks Fed Leucaena leucocephala Seed Powder

Abstract: Leucaena leucocephala has been utilized with limit as livestock feeds due to the existence of a toxic mimosine. So, it is necessary to induce mimosine toxicity to the experimental animals to study its cure and elucidation. Food intake of the chicks increased from the 1st day when the diet was changed to normal diet. Mimosine considerably existed in the feather and thyroid gland on the 20th day, but disappeared in the kidney, serum, liver and excretion. So, male broiler chicks were found to be rapidly and easil… Show more

“…L. leucocephala leaves and seeds had high content of mimosine (10-40 g/kg dry matter) (Puchala, Davis, & Sahlu, 1996). Mimosine in the seed (3.46% of dry matter) was sixfold higher than that found in the leaves (0.56% of dry matter) (Kamada et al, 1997). Mimosine could be removed by prolonged soaking of the leaves or seeds in water at 30°C (Puchala, Sahlu, Davis, & Hart, 1995).…”

“…To determine the mimosine content in the muscle of shrimp, the extraction of mimosine was carried out by the method of Kamada et al (1997) with a slight modification. One gram of ground sample was homogenised in 6 ml of 0.1 N HCl solution, using an IKA Labortechnik homogeniser (Selangor, Malaysia).…”
