Mindfulness-Based Approaches in the Treatment of Disordered Gambling

Abstract: Background and Aims: To examine the effects of mindfulness-based interventions on gambling behavior and symptoms, urges, and financial outcomes. Method: Systematic review and meta-analytic procedures were employed to search, select, code, and analyze studies conducted between 1980 and 2014, assessing the effects of mindfulness-based interventions in the treatment of disordered gambling with adults. “…The significant meta‐analytical effect size showing a connection between shallow probability discounting and gambling suggests that intervention studies aimed at changing cognitive biases related to probability discounting would be useful both in clarifying whether shallow probability discounting is a causal factor in problem gambling and offering insight into intervention approaches aimed at assisting those who are impaired or distressed by gambling. Treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy and mindfulness‐based treatment approaches intended to reduce problem gambling have had some success. For example, Petry et al .…”

“…ACT targets psychological flexibility through the use of six interconnected processes that include acceptance, present moment focus, diffusion, self as context, committed action, and values (Dixon, Wilson, & Habib, 2016). The empirical evidence in support of ACT as an effective therapeutic technique continues to expand (Maynard et al, 2015;Dixon et al, 2016), and has been evidence of an effective treatment option for substance use disorders (Dixon et al, 2016). Both, CBT and ACT, are effective interventions with regard to treating the behavioral symptoms presented in GD.…”

“…Utilizing CBT as a therapeutic intervention, and internet based CBT (Casey et al, 2017), to treat gambling disorder typically involves three targets that include 1) identifying and changing cognitive distortions about gambling, 2) reinforcing non-gambling behaviors, 3) and recognizing positive and negative consequences (Petry, 2009). Additionally, emerging evidence suggests mindfulness-based interventions, such as acceptance and commitment therapy, for disordered gambling demonstrate positive and significant effects on gambling behavior and symptoms, urges, and financial outcomes (Maynard, Wilson, Labuzienski, & Whiting, 2015).…”
