Mine Spoil Prairies Expand Critical Habitat for Endangered and Threatened Amphibian and Reptile Species

Abstract: Coal extraction has been occurring in the Midwestern United States for over a century. Despite the pre-mining history of the landscape as woodlands, spent surface coalfields are often reclaimed to grasslands. We assessed amphibian and reptile species on a large tract of coal spoil prairie and found 13 species of amphibians (nine frog and four salamander species) and 19 species of reptiles (one lizard, five turtle, and 13 snake species). Two state-endangered and three state species of special concern were docum… Show more

“…Because only six quarry sites were examined, suffi cient quantitative data was collected precisely for birds, however the relationships between environmental heterogeneity and species richness found for birds may to a certain extent be true for other taxa, for instance amphibians, the presence of which is correlated with that of birds (Spearman correlation coeffi cient 0.94, p < 0.05). Wetlands associated with quarry sites around which many bird species are centered can support amphibian populations that wouldn't otherwise have been present on the site (Myers, Klimstra 1963;Lannoo et al 2009;Sievers, 2017). Th e same can relate to the European pond turtle (Fritz, Chiari, 2013).…”

“…HFWA-W was surface mined for coal from 1976-1982, when Crawfish Frogs could not have inhabited this site. The populations represented here were established after the site was re-contoured and seeded to herbaceous vegetation, sometime after 1982 (Lannoo et al, 2009). With no evidence that adults disperse from one upland burrow to a distant upland burrow, it seems more likely that juveniles represent the dispersing stage.…”

“…From 1976(39.120275uN, 87.222187uW). From -1982, Hillenbrand was surface mined for coal (Lannoo et al, 2009). Afterward, the site was re-contoured and seeded to non-native vegetation.…”
