Mineral Arsenicals in Traditional Medicines: Orpiment, Realgar, and Arsenolite

Abstract: Mineral arsenicals have long been used in traditional medicines for various diseases, yet arsenic can be highly toxic and carcinogenic. Arsenic in traditional medicines typically comes from deliberate addition for therapeutic purposes, mainly in the form of mineral arsenicals, including orpiment (As 2 S 3 ), realgar (As 4 S 4 ), and arsenolite (contains arsenic trioxide, As 2 O 3 ). Inorganic arsenic is now accepted in Western medicine as a first line chemotherapeutic agent against certain hematopoietic cancer… Show more

“…Since these watersolvable arsenolite As 4 O 6 crystallites (which are ones of the most aggressive poisons and angiogenesis inhibitors [44,45]) can be easily removed from VChS surface by quick wet polishing, it does not worth to be used as protective layer in practical device applications, especially for advanced photonics.…”

“…• Heavy metals, including arsenic, are being used in traditional medicines in Asia, which is being addressed as a major toxicological problem, for instance in China and India (Liu et al 2008;Kamath et al 2012). Recently, arsenic trioxide is being recommended for a very special medicinal use, that is, in the treatment for acute promyelocytic leukaemia (Emadi and Gore 2010).…”

In which "calomel" (mercury chloride) or "hydrargyri oxydum rubrum" (mercury oxide) and it contains 10% cinnabar HgS (mercury sulfide) of AnGong-Niu-Huang Wan (AGNH) [47]. Also that arsenic including arsenolite, orpiment (mainly containing As 2 S 3 ), realgar (mainly containing As 4 S 4 ), arsenolite and arsenic trioxide (mainly containing As 2 O 3 ) [48].…”
