Mineral composition of apples. VII.—The relationship between fruit composition and some storage disorders

Abstract: There is evidence that the incidence of each of three storage disorders of Cox's Orange Pippin apples (senescent breakdown, low‐temperature breakdown and bitter pit) is affected by the mineral composition of the fruit. These effects have been studied by comparing initial average compositions of bulk samples with the storage behaviour of bulk replicates and by experiments with individual apples in which apples were analysed after their storage record was known. It is suggested that if the Ca level in an apple i… Show more

“…High fruit Ca concentrations were also observed in 1994 when average FM was large, exceeding 200 g (Table 1). These results imply that Gala apple is an excellent accumulator of Ca, which is so important to fruit quality (Perring 1968). Furthermore, fruit Ca concentrations appeared to be little affected by increased rates of N fertilizer or alterations in orchard-floor vegetation-management practice.…”

“…Workers at East MaIling, Kent (Perring 1968;Sharples 1968) (1975) have also analysed some samples of Southern Hemisphere fruit that were exported to the U.K., and suggested that similar threshold calcium concentrations applied to these fruit. Das & van del' Boon (1972), working in the Netherlands with 'Cox's Orange Pippin', found that the limits of fruit composition beyond which no fruit might be expected to develop pit was 0.044% CaO.…”

“…Apart from Ca content, the storage ability of apple fruits significantly depend on the content of other macroelements: primarily on P and K in apple fruits [27]. If the P content of apple fruits falls below the value of 9 mg/100g of fruit, there is also a big danger of bitter spots occurring, especially in conditions when Ca content in apple fruits is very low [28].…”
