Abstract:Chondrichthyes (Elasmobranchii and Holocephali) are distinguished by their largely cartilaginous endoskeleton that comprises an uncalcified core overlain by a mineralised layer; in the Elasmobranchii (sharks, skates, rays) this mineralisation takes the form of calcified polygonal tiles known as tesserae.
