Dune sands in southeastern Mexico are compositionally and geomorphologically controlled by fluvial input, eastward longshore currents, and the intense winds traveling through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Tehuano winds are mainly responsible for the remarkable dune sand entrapment circumscribed to the exposure of volcanosedimentary outcrops. Compositionally, the dunes are potentially influenced by granite denudation, volcano-sedimentary rocks, metamorphic units, and Quaternary sediments besides alluvium. Mono-to polycrystalline subangular to angular quartz, K-feldspar, and schists suggest that granitic-metamorphic rocks control the river and dune sands composition. Subordinate fractions of mica, Fe-Ti oxide minerals, and reduced amphibole (actinolite) indicate metamorphic-volcano sedimentary-granite as the potential parent rock of sand sources. The dune sands compositional framework shows slight flat-type rare earth elements (REE) trends with a low light rare earth elements (LREE)/heavy rare earth elements (HREE) ratio (e.g., 6.13 ± 6.00), suggesting a significant control of granite rocks. Geochemical signals, CIA and CIW chemical indices support moderate weathering. The petrographic and geochemical analyses indicate little dune sand recycling by aeolian transport despite strong wind systems along the SE coast of Mexico. This provenance study evidences the exhumation of granite, metamorphic, and volcano-sedimentary materials in the Oaxaca dune sands, confined by the regional geomorphology.

trace element concentrations, and U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircon grains recovered from the Chachalacas beach in the western Gulf of Mexico were investigated to infer palaeoenvironmental conditions. The mineralogy of bulk sediments revealed the presence of both chemically stable (titano-magnetite, zircon, and quartz) and unstable (amphibole and K-feldspar) minerals. The zircon grain microtextures or surface features were grouped as two types: (a) mechanical origin and (b) mechanical and chemical origin. The mechanical surface features such as V-marks, arc shaped, and meandering steps indicate a high-energy littoral and sub-aqueous marine environment. The chemical surface features like solution pits, precipitation, solution crevasses, adhered particles, and silica pellicle revealed a silica saturated marine environment. The well-rounded zircon grains with bulbous edges are characterized by long transport and aeolian origin. The Th/U ratio, a negative Eu (Eu/Eu* = $0.08-0.72) and positive Ce (Ce/Ce* = >1) anomalies in the chondrite-normalized REE patterns of all zircon grains suggested that they primarily formed from magmatic processes. The detrital zircon grain U-Pb ages showed a wide variation from Cenozoic to Proterozoic with an abundance of Cenozoic ages ($1.59-64.3 Ma; n = 44), interpreted as mixing of beach sediments by a longshore current. The comparison of zircon grain ages of this study with ages reported from the source terranes revealed that the likely source for Cenozoic zircon grains was the Eastern Alkaline Province of Mexico. Similarly, the Mesozoic ($68.5-241.9 Ma) and Palaeozoic ($253.2-284.8 Ma) zircon grains in the Chachalacas beach were possibly derived from the Valle de Huizachal and Mesa Central provinces. Proterozoic ages from $574 to 1846 Ma indicated a probable contribution from the Oaxacan and Chiapas Massif complexes, which are dominated by Grenvillian basement rocks.

This paper addresses this issue by investigating the composition and morphology of detrital pyroxenes collected in fine‐grained, well‐sorted, litho‐quartzose modern sand dunes deposited under moderate chemical weathering within the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain in Mexico, which record volcaniclastic supply from the nearby Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt (Mejía‐Ledezma et al, 2020; Mendieta‐Lora et al, 2018). This work investigates how the surface textures and morphology of pyroxene grains evolve during their source‐to‐sink history. This study applies to detrital clinopyroxenes concentrated in coastal dune sands of the Gulf of Mexico which were sourced in the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt then transported and deposited in environments subject to limited chemical weathering. The composition and morphology of the pyroxenes was characterised using single‐grain geochemical analysis and surface texture imagery with a novel approach based on the compactness property to assess the shape of minerals. This reveals heterogenous diopside‐augite populations, displaying mineral morphologies dominantly controlled by impact breakage along cleavages, little physical abrasion along their edges and with limited evidence for chemical weathering. Mechanical surface textures dominate over mechanical/chemical and chemical surface textures. These mechanical surface textures are preserved primarily as flat cleavage surfaces and rounded edges inherited from fluvial‐intertidal and aeolian transport, respectively. Mechanically/chemically induced surface textures are preserved as elongated depressions. Chemical surface textures are sparse and mostly represented by mammillated textures that suggest local dissolution under subaqueous conditions. The scarcity of chemical surface textures is attributed to frequent fragmentation of the clinopyroxenes along cleavages and limited chemical weathering during transport of the observed populations. Clinopyroxene grains in the coastal dune sands primarily retain surface characteristics from fluvial transport. Although the breakage of minerals along cleavages can obscure their original morphology under a weathering‐limited erosion regime, this study shows how surface textures and morphology of pyroxene grains is used to determine episodes of transport and deposition close to volcanic environments. The use of the compactness property as a shape descriptor measurement of particles provides an alternative approach to observe how clinopyroxene remains unaltered despite the high energy conditions of the coastal area.
