Minesoil Genesis and Morphology in a Spoil Chronosequence in Montana

Abstract: Minesoils from 1 to 50 years old in southeastern Montana were compared to adjacent natural soils. Due to their maninfluenced origin, minesoils had several unique morphological properties which made them difficult to classify. Weakly consolidated rock fragments, common in minesoils, acted in part like soil in supplying water and in part like rock in preventing root penetration. Low chroma mottles were common in minesoils without the influence of a high water table. Organic C content from 0–10 cm soil depth reac… Show more

“…The 1-2 year-old site at section 5 had A horizons of 3 to 5 cm thick with weak structure. This rapid development of A horizons has been observed in minesoils (Ciolkosz et al, 1985;Daniels and Amos 1981;Schafer 1980;Thurman andSencindiver 1986, Haering et al, 1993). However, distinct A horizons had not yet formed on the other 1-2 year-old site (section 4).…”

“…Although coal particulates in mine soils have been considered to be biologically inert on western strip mines (Schafer et al 1980), there can be associated physical changes in the soil along with biological effects resulting from coal's presence. Coal dust emissions may be significant near mining operations.…”

“…The seral stagnation period that occurs on reclaimed lands in the Northern Great Plains within 3-4 years after seeding may be due to microbial immobilization of available nitrogen (Schafer et al 1980). These periods may provide a 11 window 11 for nodular establishment by such means as planting with nodulated seedlings.…”
