Mini-LED Backlight Technology Progress for Liquid Crystal Display

Abstract: As consumers pursue higher display quality, Mini-LED backlight technology has become the focus of research in the current display field. With its size advantage (100–200 μm), it can achieve one-thousand-level divisional dimming, and it can also be combined with quantum dot technology to greatly improve the contrast, color gamut, dark state and other element of the display performance of LCD displays. Mini-LED backlight technology is undoubtedly the most ideal solution to realize a highly dynamic range display … Show more

“…Mini-light-emitting diodes (Mini-LEDs) are novel devices for display terminals such as TVs that can adjust the local brightness of the screen dynamically, especially in dark areas, to achieve a high contrast similar to organic LED (OLED) screens. However, the rapid transition between light and dark regions poses a challenge for the response speed of phosphors assembled on the Mini-LEDs. As Figure a shows, the Mini-LEDs are so small and dense that they cannot use lenses to smooth out light distribution. As a result, when the screen displays a video with a moving white circle on a black background, as in Figure b, there is uneven brightness and darkness at the border of the circle.…”

“…The first problem is Halo which is easily visible in dark environments. Halo is a phenomenon in which light leaks into dark areas around a border between areas of large difference in brightness [6]. It is caused by various factors such as the following :…”

“…7 Moreover, the improvement of the dimming algorithm is also an effective method used to suppress the halo effect. 8 Although there are many ways to improve the halo effect, each method also has limitations. The introducing of 3D reflector will increase the overall thickness of module, which is not suitable for consumer electronics.…”
