Miniaturized Fluorometer Based on Total Internal Reflector and Condensing Mirror

Abstract: A miniaturized fluorescence detection system based on total internal reflection (TIR) configuration, which is applicable to detecting the presence of biological materials labeled with fluorescence dye in micro total analysis systems (μTAS), is proposed. In conventional fluorescence testing and analysis devices, interference between the excitation light beam and the emitted light from dyes is unavoidable. This paper presents a fluorescence detection system based on TIR configuration that allows the excitation l… Show more

“…One promising methodology using TIR phenomena was presented in Jang and Yoo (2013), where a fluorometer integrating a total internal reflector was introduced, a condensing mirror and the detection chamber (width 1.5 mm × depth 0.8 mm × length 5 mm) within a single 1.2 mm thick polycarbonate substrate. The total internal reflector enabled orthogonal detection, and the condensing mirror increased the selectivity of the fluorescence emission.…”

“…In terms of minimizing the requirement of the high performance thin-film filter, utilizing a very short excitation pulse and applying some optical waveguide structures as depicted in [ 78 ] to separate the excitation and emission are also useful methods.…”
