Miniaturized Single Circular and Single Ring Patch Antenna for MIMO Communications Exploiting Pattern Diversity

Abstract: This paper proposes an annular-ring microstrip antenna for a 2×2 MIMO communication system. A single annular-ring microstrip antenna with two feed probes is used to generate two orthogonal radiation patterns. Radiation pattern associated with each probe is generated by FEKO simulations and shown that the patterns are orthogonal to each other. Orthogonal radiation patterns are needed to exploit pattern diversity instead of space diversity. Miniaturization is achieved by using a ferrite substrate instead of usin… Show more

“…Since higher-order modes must be excited in these antennas to achieve orthogonal radiation patterns, for a given frequency of operation (f c ) and mode number, the radius of the antenna is fixed [17]. In this case, the radius of the antenna can only be reduced by increasing the permeability and permittivity of the substrate material, which was studied in [13][14][15]. The drawback is the associated higher losses of ferrite materials, which significantly deteriorate antenna efficiency.…”

“…Instead of using two stacked CPAs, a single CPA with two ports was used to excite TM 13 (mode 3) or TM 14 (mode 4), by varying the radius of the radiator, which was achieved by using PIN-diodes. A miniaturized single CPA (Ferrite 1-CPA) and a single annular ring antenna (ARA) (Ferrite 1-ARA) with two feed probes were studied in [13][14][15]. A compact dualmode (TM 01 and TM 11 ) microstrip patch antenna was also introduced in [16].…”
