Minimal residual disease in breast cancer: an overview of circulating and disseminated tumour cells

Abstract: Within the field of cancer research, focus on the study of minimal residual disease (MRD) in the context of carcinoma has grown exponentially over the past several years. MRD encompasses circulating tumour cells (CTCs)—cancer cells on the move via the circulatory or lymphatic system, disseminated tumour cells (DTCs)—cancer cells which have escaped into a distant site (most studies have focused on bone marrow), and resistant cancer cells surviving therapy—be they local or distant, all of which may ultimately gi… Show more

“…Our results provide a concrete example of deep learning on single cells to enable personalized medicine. While the focus here is ALL, residual disease monitoring is a key response biomarker in all chronic and acute leukemias, multiple myeloma, and some nonhematological cancers for circulating tumor cells . We expect the strategy and code provided here to have broad clinical applicability across a range of cancer types.…”

“…Similarly, NAT1 deletion in MDA-MB -231 cells was associated with an increase in Snail expression and a loss of N-cadherin and β-catenin expression, which also suggests a more epithelial phenotype in these cells [9]. Mesenchymal-epithelial plasticity also involves changes in integrin expression [26]. The integrins are adhesion molecules that transmit information between the extracellular matrix, the cytoskeleton of the cells and various signalling pathways [27].…”

“…The term MRD can be defined as the lowest levels of residual disease after a curative approach either surgical or pharmacological. In fact, evidence of MRD after first-line treatment may be clinically useful to decide whether an adjuvant treatment is requested in order to avoid any possibility of disease recurrence [27].…”
