Introduction & historyEndoscopy can be broadly defined as the ability to visualize internal structures within the body using an illuminated, navigable instrument called an endoscope which can be introduced via a natural orifice or surgical incision (1). In 1806 Phillipp Bozzini produced the first internally lit endoscope which he coined "Lichtleiter" by implementing a candle and a system of angled mirrors for observation (2). The term endoscope subsequently came to prominence in 1853 when Antonin Jean Desormeaux applied this novel technology to perform endoscopic urological surgery. He coined the term "endoscope" (3). Introducción. La sialoendoscopia es un procedimiento cuya finalidad es visualizar los conductos salivales. Se utiliza como método diagnóstico y terapéutico de procesos inflamatorios, estenosis de los conductos y procesos obstructivos. Métodos. Describir los procedimientos realizados para el tratamiento de pacientes con patología inflamatoria y obstructiva de las glándulas salivales, de forma única con sialoendoscopia o con abordajes mixtos. Resultados. Un total de 24 pacientes fueron incluidos en el estudio, con edad promedio de 42 años, en su mayoría mujeres y compromiso submaxilar en 58,3 % y de parótida en 41,7 %. Respecto a la intervención, al 29,2 % de los sujetos se le realizó extracción de cálculos, al 29,2 % sialoplastia, al 25 % dilatación de conductos y al 37,5 % lavado de conductos en el mismo momento quirúrgico. Conclusión. La sialoendoscopia y el abordaje mixto es un procedimiento que puede garantizar el manejo de patologías obstructivas y estenosis de los conductos salivales, con buen pronóstico y resultados, preservando la glándula y evitando las complicaciones de la cirugía.

The Rationale: Presentation of a case where using an endoscope aided the removal of a significantly displaced mandibular third molar. Patient Concerns: Pain and infection associated with the ectopic wisdom tooth, increased risks with conventional surgical removal. Diagnosis: Chronic infection associated with the displaced, ectopic left lower third molar (LL8). Difficult surgical access and increased operative risk, with the tooth positioned lingually, below the lower border of the mandible. Treatment: Surgical removal was undertaken with the aid of a 30°-angled endoscope. This provided superior visualisation and allowed for a minimally invasive technique. Outcomes: The surgeon reported that the endoscope allowed for increased efficiency and ease of surgery. The patient experienced minimal postoperative pain and no long-term complications. Take-away Lessons: Endoscopes can aid surgeons in cases with difficult access and increased risks. In this case, the endoscope allowed for a minimally invasive technique, minimising the risks of surgery, and reducing postoperative morbidity.
