Minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robot‐assisted) approach for solid pseudopapillary tumor of the distal pancreas: a single‐center experience

Abstract: A minimally invasive (laparoscopic/robot-assisted) approach for SPT of the distal pancreas is thought to be more appropriate than and preferable to conventional open surgery in well-selected patients.

“…Since its first application by Melvin [24], the robotic approach was seen as a particularly suitable approach for an operation where a meticulous and bloodless dissection was crucial, thus potentially broadening the indication for RDP [25,26]. The increase in the number of published series of RDP confirms the safety and feasibility of this approach and highlights the increasing interest of the surgical community in its utilization, which can potentially overcome the potential drawbacks of LDP [10,27].…”

“…Kang et al . reported perioperative surgical outcomes in 11 cases with SPN who underwent laparoscopic/robotic‐assisted surgery as follows : mean operative time, 339 min; mean blood loss, 410 mL; pancreatic fistula of grade B or C, 3 of 11 cases (27.3%); and length of hospital stay, 9.7 days. The short‐term results of our 14 consecutive laparoscopic pancreatectomies for SPN were not inferior to the outcomes of the series by either Morikawa et al .…”

“…Kang et al . reported an earlier oral intake, a shorter hospital stay, and no increase in morbidity over a short‐term follow‐up in 11 patients who underwent laparoscopic/robotic‐assisted surgery (Lap‐SDP , n = 5; Lap‐SPDP, n = 6, including 3 who underwent a pancreatic tail‐preserving procedure) compared with an open surgery group . “…Laparoscopic excision of the SPT is safe, feasible, more appropriate, and preferable to conventional open surgeries for these tumors in the pancreatic tail. 5,3032 It has well-documented advantages as compared with open surgery. In this study all patients were treated with laparoscopic resections because we have not been performing open surgery for the isolated lesions in the corpus and the cauda of the pancreas since the introduction of laparoscopic pancreatic resections at our institution.…”
