Minimally Invasive Repair of Pectus Excavatum - The Nuss Procedure. A European Multicentre Experience

Abstract: Since the first description in 1998, the minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum has gained increasing acceptance. The aim of this survey is to report on the experiences of eight European centres with this technique. 172 patients with a mean age of 15.1 (+/- 4.6) years were treated and evaluated, 35.5 % were symptomatic. 45.3 % of the patients had an asymmetric configuration of the chest, 74.3 % had a CT index above 3.25. Mean duration of the operative procedure was 76 minutes. Major complications, inclu… Show more

“…Several papers have been published on the results of this technique. Most series are small in numbers but some centres have extensive experience [2,13,20,21] and reports are emerging where the technique has been used in adults [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…In 1998, a new technique of minimally invasive repair of PE (MIRPE) was first described by Nuss [3] to avoid several operative features of the modified Ravitch repair procedure. Today, the MIRPE technique is well established and represents a common used technique [4][5][6][7][8][9]. The shorter operating time, smaller incisions, and considerably less dissection have made the MIRPE procedure very appealing both to surgeons and patients, thereby resulting in a large increase of the number of patients requesting operative treatment, and consequently, an increase of the number of PE repairs.…”

“…Characteristic feature of FCHD is tendency to progression, which is closely linked with a growth and age of children. Further development of FCHD leads to the more severe disorders of lungs, to the displacement and rotation of a heart, as a result -to the decompensation of cardiovascular and respiratory systems [4,6]. Etiology of FCHD in the modern time is not research enough, but the major role in its development plays such factors as: hereditary predisposition, genetic defects.…”
